Some random thoughts....
Oct. 13th, 2008 11:08 pmwhile watching VH1's Rock Honors for The Who.
After watching this, I think it's official. All my idols are dead or have sold out. Quite often both.
- Weirdly enough, the best (non-Who) performance of the night was Tenacious D's cover of "Squeeze Box"
- The Foo Fighters were a close second, covering "Young Man's Blues" and "Bargain"
- The Flaming Lips and Incubus sucked. They couldn't find anyone else to fill those slots? I don't think I can listen to Tommy without some serious therapy after seeing what those two sets of talentless assholes did to their selections.
- Pearl Jam did two songs from the greatest Who album, more or less note-for-note. How...boring.
- Zak Starkey is a passable replacement for Keith Moon. Pino Palladino isn't able to pull of filling in for Entwhistle.
- Townshend and Daltry can still bring it.

You sir, are wrong.
Date: 2008-10-14 09:50 am (UTC)Foos were adequate, but Young Man Blues isn't even a Who original, it's a Mose Allison jazz track from the 30s. I thought they were a bit disappointing, and while Bargain was good, YMB was a crap track to start with.
Tenacious D sucked. Incubus sucked. Zak Starkey is the second coming of the man. (Moon actually taught him how to drum, so there you go..) Pino Palladino is the only person alive who could play The Ox's part well enough to let Rog and Pete shine without overpowering them, which even Entwistle used to do. Great player.
And yes, Rog and Pete can still bring it. Just fantastic.
