Handed in my two week's notice to The Powers That Be at Vale of Tears, Inc. yesterday.

I have not spent a weekend looking forward to work on Monday like that in a looooooong time....

I'll be going in as a Unix admin, for the CS department. My hiring will double the fulltime staff they have.

It's a rather sad commentary on the state of affairs there, when everyone just shakes your hand, and makes a remark along the lines of "If I were you, I'd be dancing down the hallways of this place for the next two weeks."

Well. Being an admin for a department of computer scientists ought to be interesting. Are they mostly theorists?

It's a shit job. Your average CS prof. doesn't know a thing about running actual networks and computers, yet think they are god's gift to computing because they have a PhD. If they're tenured, it's even worse. I was a student working for the CS dept. at ODU, and I'm not sure if p_e will be better or worse off as a real full time employee at Tufts. We didn't have any real authority, but at the the same time, they didn't have much to threaten us with, since working at McDonald's paid better.

Good luck Mr. S.

There seems to be a good chunk of theorists there, though I've only met two professors (and one the department chair), so this is mostly gleaned from the web, and that seems to be pretty pitched towards listing theoretical stuff, papers published, etc., so I could be wrong.

As for faculty, well, I've been working with Ph D. scientists for going on four years now, and the group I'm going into is using faculty to help admin stuff because of the manpower shortage, and they really would like to get out of the managing servers gig.

And one of the faculty is on the USENIX board of directors, which doesn't hurt either.

A USENIX board memeber? Your job may actually not suck.

The thing about the PhDs you currently work with is that they are probably like the ones I work with. They aren't in academentia, so the PhD was just another step up the job ladder (and most of ours hide their doctorates, as opposed to hiding behind them).

It's a whole other world in a uni setting; they wield those damn pieces of vellum like swords.

So who gets the detonator codes for the thermite, semtex, and C4 already planted?
